Mildred Cordelia Pennington Tilson's Obituary
Mildred Cordelia Pennington Tilson was born on October 21, 1914 in Crawfordsville, GA. At the age of 8, she moved to Orlando, FL. While there she worked at Drake’s Sandwich Shop and the Altamonte Springs Hotel. In Florida she was married to her first husband, Frederick Charles Wells.
In 1937, she moved to Washington, DC, where she worked at the Rhode Island Avenue Hot Shops and was a telephone operator and dispatcher for Arlington Yellow Cabs. Later she was owner and operator of Wells Restaurant at 15th and Capital Street. In 1942, she married Columbus Clarence Tilson who was in the Navy. They moved from their dairy farm in Bristersburg to Haymarket, to Warrenton, where they managed Walter Arrington’s farm which is now the site of the Warrenton Wal-Mart. Later they moved to Culpeper, where she worked as manager of Tastee-Freeze and at the Federal Reserve Bank’s Communications and Records Center.
She is survived by her children, Margaret Ann Wells of Culpeper, Lonnie Gene Wells of Rockville, Barbara Lee Hersh of Arlington, Robert Columbus Tilson and Linda Carol Tilson of Culpeper.
Her grandchildren include Larry Wells, David Wells, Donald Wells, Annette Hersh (deceased), and Donna Hersh Wendt, great grandchildren Donnie Wells, Dominica Wendt, Sandy Wendt, and Heather Wendt.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 6, 2007 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, VA 22701.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 7, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel.
Interment will follow in Culpeper National Cemetery.
