Michael Ray Sanders' Obituary
Michael Ray Sanders, 67, passed away on April 16, 2025, at home in Lake Anna, VA.
Born on April 23, 1957, Michael dedicated 14 years of service to the Army achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class, embracing the discipline and camaraderie that military life fosters. After Michael finished basic training, he attended Advanced Individual Training (AIT) as Fire Support Specialist (13F) graduating 2nd in his class. He then began supporting intelligence activities and target processing for artillery units and maneuver brigades. He then transitioned to become a Computer Machine Operator (74D) and Computer Programmer/Analyst (74F) supervising, installing, operating and performing maintenance on multi-function/multi-user processing system(s). His military career took him to Germany for nearly 6 years as well as throughout the United States to include a four-year term at US Military Academy (USMA) West Point.
The U.S. Army recognized Michael for his honorable service with Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal, 4 Good Conduct Medals, 2 NCO Professional Development Ribbons, Army Service Ribbon, and 2 Overseas Service Ribbons. Following his military career, he transitioned to a civilian role, working for 27 years as a Transportation Industry Analyst at the Surface Transportation Board within the Department of Transportation.
Michael was renowned for his vibrant personality and ability to light up any room with his stories and infectious laughter. A true entertainer, he held a deep passion for history, particularly that of his beloved country, which he served with pride. His hobbies were a testament to his zest for life; he was an active member of the Southern Cruisers in Virginia, relished his time at the Maryland Renaissance Faire, and enjoyed portraying Captain Smith in Titanic re-enactments. Michael’s joy was also found in cruising in his slingshot, riding motorcycles, and spending cherished moments with his grandchildren, as well as playing with his dogs, Kota and Chai.
He leaves behind a loving family: his wife, Kimberly Sanders; mother, Sandra French; sons, Brandon Sanders, Colin Sanders, Eric Schnieder, and Zac Schnieder; daughters-in-law, Ashley Sanders and Mimi Schnieder; brother, Rob Sanders; sister-in-law, Jobella Sanders; uncles, Jack Johnson and Harvey Huang; and his grandchildren, Mason Sanders, Isabella Schnieder, and Liam Schnieder. Michael was preceded in death by his father, Lyle Sanders.
A memorial gathering will be held on May 1, 2025, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at Found & Sons Funeral Chapel of Fredericksburg, 10719 Courthouse Rd., Fredericksburg, VA 22407. Following the service, a procession to the graveside will depart promptly at 1:30 pm. A graveside ceremony is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. at the National Memorial Cemetery at Quantico, 18424 Joplin Rd., Triangle, VA 22172. Michael’s life and service will be honored amidst the company of family, friends, and fellow veterans, reflecting on a life richly lived and profoundly impactful.
