Michael Wayne Bailey's Obituary
Michael Wayne Bailey, a 57-year-old homeless Veteran, was discovered passed on Tuesday, April 04, 2023, in Leesburg, Virginia.
Michael served three years in the US Navy and was discharged in 1993. He was proud of his Naval service, but struggled with his Department of Veterans Affairs service-connected Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which ultimately lead to his homelessness and untimely passing.
Michael was born in West Virginia on April 29, 1965, and graduated from Oceana High School West Virginia in 1983. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1990 and served three years. He served as a Seaman on the USS St. Louis (LKA 116) and the USS Enterprise (CVN 65) receiving the Humanitarian Service Medal and two Joint Meritorious Unit Awards for Joint Task Forces Sea Angel in Bangladesh and Fiery Vigil in the Philippines during May and June 1991. Additionally, Michael became a Shellback on May 19, 1992, earned the National Defense Service Medal and two Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, and served in Korea.
Despite the challenges Michael faced after leaving the Navy, he was well liked in his community and will be missed by his friends. Michael was predeceased by his father, Onnie Gather Bailey; mother, Doris Emogene Snuffer; and brother, Billy Joe Bailey.
A burial ceremony with the full Naval honors will be held Thursday, May 25, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Quantico National Cemetery to honor his life and service to his country. All who are interested in Veterans and their wellbeing are welcome to attend. If attending, please be at the Administration Building near the main gate by 10:45 a.m.
