Melvin Grey Coleman's Obituary
Melvin Grey Coleman, 98, of Culpeper, passed away on Monday, March 23, 2026. He was born January 19, 1928, in Portsmouth, VA to the late Grace and Irma Coleman.
Melvin is survived by daughter-in-law, Carol Louise Coleman; two grand-children, Eric Coleman and Kim Beeler; great-grandchildren, Carmen Coleman, Caden Coleman, Conrad Coleman, Ashley Coleman, and Jacob Beeler.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Lucille Coleman; his son, Stephen G. Coleman; and three siblings.
Melvin leaves behind a legacy of service, skill, and a life richly lived.
A proud patriot, Melvin honorably served his country during both World War II and the Korean War Conflict. In addition to his military service, he worked as a Merchant Mariner, dedicating himself to supporting his nation both on land and at sea. He was also a devoted member of the American Legion in Culpeper, Virginia, where he found camaraderie among fellow veterans.
Melvin was a man of remarkable talent and curiosity. Gifted with his hands and mind, he enjoyed building and repairing electronics, always eager to understand how things worked. He had a passion for craftsmanship and was especially interested in making firearms, a hobby that reflected his precision and attention to detail.
Beyond his technical pursuits, Melvin had a deep appreciation for classic automobiles. He loved attending car shows and took great pride in collecting and admiring old cars. His enthusiasm for aviation also led him to become a pilot, adding yet another dimension to his adventurous and accomplished life.
Melvin will be remembered as a man of quiet strength, intelligence, and dedication. His life’s journey touched many, and his memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at 2 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery, Culpeper, VA with American Legion Chaplain Johnny Wilson officiating. Honors will be provided by VFW Post 2524.
