Maude Butler Settle's Obituary
Maude Butler Settle, 91, passed away May 11, 2026, at her residence surrounded by family. She was born on June 21, 1934, to the late James Butler, Sr. and Elizabeth Brown Butler.
She leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and devotion to her family and community. She was truly the foundation of her family — a steady source of strength, wisdom, comfort, and unconditional love for generations who were blessed to know her.
Maude was baptized at Stevensburg Baptist Church, where her faith remained an important part of her life. She joyfully sang in the church choir and found great happiness in worship and fellowship. Her warm spirit and uplifting presence touched countless lives within her family and beyond.
A natural caregiver, Maude dedicated her life to caring for others. She lovingly helped raise many of her nieces and nephews, as well as countless others who came to know her as a guiding hand, trusted confidant, and second mother. Her home and heart were always open to anyone in need of love, advice, or simply a good conversation.
Maude had a deep love for music and dancing. Whether listening to her favorite songs, singing along, or enjoying time with family and friends, she brought joy and laughter wherever she went. She never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone. Her gift of talking and connecting with people made everyone feel welcomed, valued, and loved.
She will be remembered for her generous heart, vibrant personality, unwavering faith, and the countless lives she helped shape through her kindness and compassion. Maude’s love and influence will continue to live on through the family and friends who cherished her dearly.
She leaves behind a family who adored her and many beloved relatives, friends, and community members who will forever treasure the memories and lessons she shared.
Maude is survived by her children, Linda Nicholson (Charles), Roger A. Settle, Elizabeth Settle Shifflett (Randy); sister, Lillie Mae Lookabill; five grandchildren, Tammy Nicholson-Feaganes (Tony), Brian Nicholson (Keri), Stacey Settle, Vernon Settle and Justin Shifflett (Jennifer); great-grandchildren; Tara Nicholson (Paul), Ashley Christian (Bailey), Micah Lacy, Jonah Shifflett, Trey Settle, Ciera Corbin, Natalie Nicholson and Charlee Nicholson; four great-great-grandchildren, Stetson Harris, Conner Settle, Rosalie Settle and Chase Settle.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin R. Settle, her son; Howard Vernon Settle; her siblings, Marjorie Printz, Virginia Green, James Phillip Butler, Jr., John Thelbert Butler, and Robert Lee Butler.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 15, 2026, from 1-2 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, VA.
A graveside service will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, VA. on May 15, 2026, at 2 p.m.
Pallbearers serving the family are Justin, Micah, Jonah, Bailey, Paul, and Brian.
