Mary Ellen Johnston's Obituary
Mary Ellen Strickland Johnston of Gordonsville passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 17, 2007, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mrs. Johnston was born Mary Ellen Hinkle on Aug. 13, 1927, in Nallen, W.Va. She was adopted and raised by Joseph and Amanda Strickland.
Mary Ellen grew up during the Depression, was twice married and was mother to several infants who died at birth.
She worked for many years as a waitress, a job she loved, and as a restaurant owner, retiring from Red Lobster in Charlottesville.
Mary was a proud member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Nathaniel Gordon VFW Post 7638 in Gordonsville, where she served many years as treasurer.
Mary Ellen leaves behind her daughter, Sandra; grandchildren, Charity and Gary; and great-grandchildren, Kevin and Cassandra. She loved animals and also leaves behind her beloved dog, Peaches, and several kittens, who were her babies.
Her ashes will be privately spread on a mountaintop in West Virginia in August.
