Just over a decade ago, a trip to the lobby of the Culpeper Food Closet brought Mary Lou into my life. There sat a spirited, bubbly, happy woman who was chatting with everyone. She greeted me and quickly pointed me in the right direction to donate produce from my garden. Later, I came to know Mary Lou as the “bag lady”. She would take home donated plastic bags and double them to create a strong vehicle for food delivery. She took such pride in how she handled the plastic bags. If asked about bags, she would offer advice on the proper technique. She really did a great job. The bags looked as if they had been starched and ironed. Her bags were a valued contribution to the Food Closet. Her dedication and persistence set the standard for how bags are prepped even now at the Food closet. As time passed, I was introduced to her husband Dale and other family members. It was easy to see that she was loved and treasured by her family. Her stories were entertaining, and I suspect she now has an audience in heaven. She will be missed. And her memory will always be a blessing.
