Martha Jo Reiner's Obituary
January 19, 1946 - May 26, 2020
Martha Jo (Raub) Reiner, 74, of Culpeper, Virginia passed away peacefully at the Breezy Knoll Residential Care home in Culpeper from complications related to Alzheimer's.
Martha was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. She graduated from Bishop Watterson High School in 1964. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism from Ohio University in 1968.
The majority of Martha's career was spent at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia where she served under two university presidents and in two departments: Protocol and Human Resources (HR). While working as the first-ever Reward and Recognition Coordinator, Martha started an award-winning recognition program for faculty and staff. The program was lauded by College and University Professional for Human Resources and by the Washington Post's Great Workplaces. Martha’s professionalism and warmth added to the program's positive reception. When Martha retired in 2005, the George Mason HR and Payroll department established a special recognition (to add to the program) in her honor - the Martha J. Reiner Customer Service Award. This special award has been given every year since her retirement, and Martha attended many of the award ceremonies.
She resided in Tucson, Arizona with her husband Karl from 2005 to 2014 before moving back to Virginia to be closer to her grandchildren.
The consummate hostess, Martha enjoyed opening her home for family, friends, and neighbors, especially during Christmas and other holidays. She was an active member of Precious Blood Catholic Church in Culpeper, loved to bake, and always made her grandchildren and family a top priority. Her love of Hershey Bars was legendary.
Martha is survived by son Matthew of Culpeper, Virginia; son Jonathan (Melissa) of Elkton, Maryland; three grandchildren, Emelyn, Olivia, and Owen; sister Ruth Ann Andrietti (Tony) of Columbus, Ohio; brother-in-law Paul Reiner (Sheila) of Dublin, Ohio; brother-in-law John Reiner (Sheila) of Dublin, Ohio; sister-in-law Lois Reiner of Westerville, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Josephine Raub; an older brother, Carl Raub III; and Karl Reiner, her husband of 49 years.
