Maria Alston Young's Obituary
Maria Alston Young, 87, of Culpeper, VA formerly of Chapel Hill, NC died on Thursday, October 16, 2008 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law. She was born on September 13, 1921 in Wilmington, NC to the late Richard Anthony and Maria Alston Davis.
Maria was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Culpeper, VA and the Chapel of the Cross in Chapel Hill, NC. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she was a leader in many aspects of her life from helping save the historic UNC Campus Y building to being a dedicated human rights activist.
Maria’s bright blue eyes reflected her love of life and the wonders of nature. Her smile revealed her steadfast faith in Human goodness. Her sweet spirit and gentle nature will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her children, John Davis Young, of Chapel Hill, NC, Nancy Binns Young of Chapel Hill, NC and Maria Young Jones and her husband, Lawrence Hughes Jones of Culpeper.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at 2 p.m. at St. Stephens Episcopal Church with Rev. Michael Gray officiating.
At a later date, a celebration of her life will be held at the Campus Y in Chapel Hill with a burial service and inurnment following at the Chapel of the Cross.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to Hospice of the Rapidan, PO Box 1715, Culpeper, VA 22701.
