Margaret Ann Hathaway's Obituary
Margaret Ann (West) Hathaway peacefully passed away on September 9, 2024, at Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center in Spotsylvania, VA, at age 63 following a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Her passing leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of her family.
Born in Gloucester, VA, to Edgar C. West Sr. and Edith A. (Atkinson) West, Margaret dedicated many years to various roles, including at the family-owned Tastee Freeze, as a bookkeeper for the YWCA, and stocking cards for American Greetings in local stores. On 26 May 1984, she married James R. Hathaway of Massachusetts, and together they built a life full of love and devotion.
Margaret’s greatest joy was being a mother to her three children: Jessica Marie Hathaway (Colby Goetz), Amanda Lynne Hathaway (Shanon Brown), and Christopher Walter Hathaway. She was also a proud grandmother to Sonder Luray West Hathaway, and her family meant the world to her. Her commitment to her family was unwavering, and her love for them was evident in everything she did. The love for her in our hearts will last forever.
She will be remembered for her acts of kindness and generosity, her love and intentionality, and the compassion that she shared and showed to others. She always went above and beyond to show care and kindness for everyone, even strangers. It brought her joy to offer simple acts of kindness, like leaving a cold bottle of water for the mail carrier every day or giving small gifts to the greeters at Walmart. Her tender, loving spirit will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her brother, Edgar C. West, her sister, Patricia G. (West) Smith, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A celebration of Margaret’s life will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 20, 2024 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg. The family will receive friends one hour prior. A graveside service will follow at approximately 2pm at Rosewell Memorial Gardens, 3609 Providence Road, Hayes, VA 23072.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Margaret’s honor to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 8th Avenue, 16th Floor, New York, NY 10001, or online at https://alzfdn.org/donate/.
