Lori McFarland Lohr's Obituary
Lori McFarland Lohr, 52, of Henrico, VA, passed away on Wednesday January 7th, 2026 after suffering complications from illness. Lori was born in Culpeper, VA to James Herbert McFarland and Bonnie Bailey McFarland on March 11th, 1973. Her brother, Justin, joined the family when Lori was four years old. Lori spent her formative years in the Culpeper community, graduating from Culpeper County High School in 1991. The McFarland household was rich in love and faith, two traits that Lori would carry with her for her entire life. While studying Criminology at James Madison University, Lori would meet the love of her life, Jon Lohr, through mutual friends. The two quickly bonded over their shared sense of humor and love of music at their first of many Graves Mountain Bluegrass Festivals together in 1995. Jon moved to Harrisonburg while Lori finished her studies, graduating with a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Sociology in 1998. The couple married at Alum Spring Baptist Church in Culpeper, on November 16th (the same date as Lori’s parents), 2002. After living in Culpeper for a time, Lori and Jon soon moved to Richmond, VA, where they had resided ever since.
Lori’s career focus in training and education began during her tenure at the American Lung Association in Harrisonburg and later blossomed with her role as Education and Convention Manager for the Professional Insurance Agents Association of VA and DC after her move to Richmond. Eventually Lori would start a new chapter in life at Greenwood United Methodist Church’s After School Program, where she taught and cared for the children of the Longdale Community for several years.
A devout Christian, Lori gave untold hours of her life in service to the church and non-profit organizations. As the Lay Leader of Laurel Park United Methodist Church, she played a vital role in the church’s merger with Greenwood United Methodist Church, and ultimately served Greenwood as their Communications Director, as well as serving several committees from Summer 2024 until her passing.
In 2023, Lori became a member of the board for Aggie’s Attic, a non-profit thrift-store in the Lakeside of Richmond, VA whose entire proceeds go to serve the Greater Richmond Community, including feeding over 125 families through the co-operative backpack ministry with Glen Allen Baptist Church. Lori also handled the store’s marketing and communications and would help inside the store as needed. Agnes Dalton, the visionary behind this mission effort, was a mentor and dear friend to Lori, and Lori and the Aggie’s team took great pride in ensuring Aggie’s mission continued after her passing.
An administrator and event planner extraordinaire, Lori was always ready with her notepad and colored pens for meetings and decorations for occasions of all kinds. She was an excellent cook and baker. Her legendary Five-Flavor Pound Cake will certainly be missed at future gatherings. Lori took great joy in birthdays and gift-giving, which was certainly her “love language.” Lori was also quite the dog lover, and one of her and Jon’s biggest joys in life was their black lab, Johnny Cash.
Family and friends played an essential role in Lori’s life. The members of Lori’s circle will remember her incredible capacity for listening, for putting others before herself, and for setting an example of Christian love and servanthood. These qualities would be remarkable enough in and of themselves, but when weighed against the numerous health challenges Lori experienced in her later life, her warmth and selflessness take on new meaning.
In the wake of her passing, Lori leaves her devoted husband, Jon Andrew Lohr; her father, James Herbert McFarland; her brother, Justin Adam McFarland and sister-in-law Tammy Bache McFarland, along with two nieces, whom she absolutely adored, Katelynn Ada, and Katherine Marie. Lori was preceded in death by her dear mother, Bonnie Bailey McFarland.
