Linus Michael Raring's Obituary
Linus Michael Raring, born March 6, 1912 in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania died peacefully on December 29, 2015 in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Raised in Harrisburg and educated at Lehigh University, Mr. Raring married Cornelia Ligtermoet in June of 1941, their marriage lasting nearly 70 years until her death. He is survived by his sister, Jane Marlatt of Falls Church, VA; one of two sons, David Raring; six grandchildren; three from much missed son, Andrew and wife, SueAnn. All but one of 12 great-grandchildren knew their great GGF, the last he met being his names’ sake, Linus, 100 years his junior.
After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in metallurgical engineering in 1934 he held several jobs in steel and specialty metals where his primary role was the development of new materials for advanced applications. In 1954 he joined Pratt and Whitney Aircraft as director of materials development activities for the engines that power the commercial and military aircraft of today. In the ’70s Mr. Raring played a key role in a P&WA project to develop a nuclear propulsion system for air and space craft.
In 1975 after 40 years in industry, Mr. Raring joined the Department of Energy where he directed material development efforts required for advanced coal fired power generation systems. After retiring from government service, he continued this work as a consultant until fully retiring in 1990.
Mr. Raring served on a number of government and professional committees, design review boards, and research panels including the Materials Advisory Board of the National Academy of Sciences.
In his adult life, the Rarings called Islip and Utica, NY, Glastonbury, CT (twice), Fox Chapel, PA, and Reston and Fredericksburg, VA home.
Mr. Raring’s intelligent and witty conversation and insight will be missed by all who knew him.
