Lt. Col. Lewis A. Boggs, IV (USA Ret)
Colonel Boggs, age 94, of Livingston, Spotsylvania County, entered life eternal on May 19, 2018, at his home.
Colonel Boggs was born on April 25, 1924, in Spotsylvania, at his ancestral home, “Livingston”. He graduated from Spotsylvania High School in 1941 and received his Bachelor’s Degree from Randolph-Macon College in 1948. He was a World War II veteran, having gone ashore at Omaha Beach in Normandy, France, where he was assigned to “C” Company, 51st Armored Infantry Battalion, 4th Armored Division, which spearheaded General Patton’s Third Army drive across France into Germany. Among his many awards are The Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Purple Heart (for wounds in combat), Bronze Star Medal (for valor in combat), the Meritorious Service Medal, and The Legend of Merit Medal. He later served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, the Quartermaster Corps, several Joint Service Command Headquarters, and The United Nations Command, with tours in Korea and Vietnam. He performed over 27 years of active military duty.
Colonel Boggs married Marold Mary Millar Dunlop in Mansfield, Nottingham, England, on December 3, 1945. The couple had three sons. His wife Marold died in 1995, after 50 years of happy marriage.
Throughout his worldwide military career, Colonel Boggs was able to exercise his devotion to his church and to the training of young people. He was a Licensed Lay-reader in his church since 1943. From time to time he was a Scout Master, a Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, a Church Lector and Lay Reader, and a Senior Warden of his church. He was most recently a member of St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Falmouth, Virginia, and had been a member of their vestry.
Lewis married Norma Jean Beauregard Smith on December 28, 1996. She predeceased him on July 28, 2016, after 20 years of mutually devoted love. His eldest son, Lewis “Alec” Alexander Boggs, V, also predeceased him on February 19, 2018. He is survived by two sons, Robert Bruce Boggs of Kansas, and James S. Boggs of Lynchburg, Virginia; one sister, Maude Boring of Williamsburg, VA; two step-daughters, Barbara Suplita and Cathy McManama; a grandson, Travis McKay Boggs; two step-grandsons, Thomas (Bud) McManama and Sean Zewe; and a step-granddaughter, Abby McManama. Lewis was also preceded in death by his brothers, Francis and Joseph Boggs.
Lewis’ family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29, at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 30, in the funeral home chapel, with Father Jeff Johnson officiating. A reception with a light luncheon will be held from 12-1 p.m. Burial will follow at Quantico National Cemetery at 2 p.m.
