Lawrence Worth Hatch, Jr.'s Obituary
Lawrence Worth Hatch Jr., 92, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at Woodmont Center in Fredericksburg.
He was born Oct. 26, 1923, in Alexandria. Larry’s father died in a railroad accident when he was a year old. His mother, Mollie Holmzell Butler Hatch, remarried and Larry had four siblings: Dikran V. Kavaljian, Peg Kavaljian, Frances Kavaljian and Joann Cornell.
After high school, Larry joined the U.S. Army and served in World War II, first as a captain’s adjutant and then a forward observer, in North Africa and Italy. During his service, he received the Purple Heart.
Following the war, he attended art school and then attended Madison College on the G.I. Bill to earn his teaching degree. He married Mary Jean Morrison in 1950, and then taught History and English at Mount Vernon and Lee High Schools. He then taught Distributive Education/Marketing at West Springfield High School in Northern Virginia.
After 29 years of public school teaching, he retired. He and Jean spent six years overseas, teaching for the Department of Defense. In full retirement he and Jean enjoyed many years living in North Beach, Md. His final years were spent happily at Chancellor’s Village in Fredericksburg.
Larry was predeceased by his wife, Jean. He is survived by sister Peg Kavaljian; brother Frances Kavaljian; daughter Mary Caroline Deaderick, her husband, Bob, and their children Robert, Elizabeth and David; son Jefferson Hatch, his wife, Kay, and their children Scott and Bryant; and son Benjamin, his wife, Joy, and their children Nicholas and Dania.
The family wishes to thank the staffs of Chancellor's Village Assisted Living, Woodmont Center, Mary Washington Hospital and especially the ER personnel, 4–South nurses, doctors and administrators, for their many kindnesses, excellent care and compassion.
Viewing and visitation with the family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 20, at Found & Sons Funeral Chapel, Fredericksburg. The funeral and luncheon will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 21, at The Presbyterian Church, Fredericksburg. Burial will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 21 in Bethel Cemetery, Wilkes Street, Alexandria, VA.
