Katheryne Alfred's Obituary
Katheryne Crawley Brown ing Alfred, 94, of Hartwood died Thursday, June 12, 2008, at her home.
Katheryne, who was known as Kack, was born Dec. 6, 1913, in Forest, Va., to the late William Lindsay Browning and Lizzie Otey Moorman Browning, and moved with her family to Stafford County in the 1920s.
She graduated from Mary Washington College and earned a master’s degree from the College of William & Mary. After several years as a social worker in the Shenandoah Valley, she married and returned to Stafford. Kack was devoted to her family, steadfast in her faith and an inspiration to all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Strother Moore Newman Jr. and Joseph Woodrow Ralph Alfred; a stepson, S.M. Newman III and his wife, Margaret; her sister, Nancy Browning Bryant and her husband, Clayton; and her brother, W.L. Browning Jr.
Survivors include her sons, George Lindsay Newman and his wife, Ann Rabson, and Walter Crawley Newman and his wife, Barbara; her stepsons Joseph Ralph Alfred and his wife, Carol, and Charles Dwight Alfred; her caregiver and dear friend, Georgia J. Shirley Frazier; her sister-in-law, Virginia K. Jingles Browning; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17, at Antioch United Methodist Church with the Rev. Chris Fair officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service. Burial will be private at a later date.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Hartwood Volunteer Rescue Squad, Box 22, Hartwood, Va. 22471.
