Katherine Elizabeth Chewning
Katherine Elizabeth Chewning, 90, of Spotsylvania went home to be with her maker on Thursday, December 4, 2008.
She was the mother of eight children and was married to Roy Chewning for 63 and a half years until his death in 1999.
She loved her God and was a pillar in her church, Olivet United Methodist Church, from her childhood. Her father helped build this church, a fact of which she was very proud. She was always disappointed if she missed going to church on Sundays. She retired from Morganstern’s pant factory after 24 years and loved gardening and canning.
She loved her children and grandchildren dearly and was beloved by them, as well as the extended family and others that knew her. She had 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and numerous neices and nephews. She is survived by seven children; James Chewning of Spotsylvania, Thelma Rice of Mathews, VA; Carrie Nutter of Harrisonburg, VA, Irvin Chewning of Spotsylvania, Deloris Johnson of Staunton, VA, Donald Chewning of Hollidaysburg, PA and Barbara Hawley of Burke, VA. She is also survived by one of six siblings, Evelyn Harless. She was preceded in death by her second son, Woodrow Chewning on December 5, 2007.
She was a plain spoken woman with strong convictions, a love for family values and reveled in family gatherings. A product of the depression years, she wasted nothing and always put her faith in God. In her last years, she kept alive the memories of her husband. Now she may join him in heaven.
Katherine’s family will receive friends Monday, December 8, 2008 from 7:00 ~ 9:00 pm at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel~Cremation Service, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg, Virginia 22407.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at 11:00 am at Olivet United Methodist Church, 7676 Stubbs Bridge Road, Spotsylvania, Virginia 22551.
