June Kendall Carty's Obituary
June Kendall Carty, 96, died on May 12, 2017 at home in Spring Arbor, Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Born Betty June Aumiller on July 8, 1920 in Abilene, Kansas to Marian Francis Aumiller and Grace Loyd Aumiller, June went to Kansas University then came to Washington DC during World War II to work for the US Government where she met and, in 1942, married Fred Eleven Kendall (died: 1977).
Most of June’s extraordinary career was spent as the administrative assistant to the U.S. House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee, chaired by Rep. Wilbur Mills. A master story-teller, June’s many colorful stories from her days on the Hill educated and entertained her family and friends for decades.
June had an extremely interesting life, having enjoyed a variety of interests. She traveled extensively all over the world, was a master bridge player, playing regularly in a Capitol Hill duplicate bridge club, an avid reader and a dedicated follower of current events. Having taught herself to play the piano on a cardboard keyboard as a child in rural Kansas, June finally got her hands on a real piano in college and from there became an accomplished pianist, accompanying groups and playing beautifully for everyone’s enjoyment.
June is survived and deeply loved by life-long friends, and her three daughters, Karen Lambert of Wilmington, Delaware, and Betsy Saylor and Mitzi Brown, both of Fredericksburg, Virginia; seven grandchildren, Rally, Ricky and Randy Lambert, Billy Saylor and Kendall Mostafavi, Meaghan Rose Kadakia and Katie Rose; and 21 great-grandchildren.
June’s motto in life was “To Thine Own Self Be True”, which she personified to the very end.
Services are currently being planned. In lieu of flowers, June expressed her wishes that donations be made to Virginia Organizing at https://www.virginia-organizing.org/.
