So sorry to find this news. Shocked actually. Joe was a kind and generous person - one of those down to earth special people we rarely meet, but are enriched by having known them. A very genuine guy. My wife met him first (late 1980’s I think) through a chicken necropsy when he was with the Warrenton Animal Lab. Later we connected briefly as as family through the Rappahannock 4-H Club. Once, Joe took my boy Sean and me up to a cold ridge near Winchester one early morning to observe the raptor migration heading south. Later, when Sean was in college, Dr Joe allowed him to intern at the Warrenton Lab. Sorry for this late post but I just came across this obituary as I was reaching out to the Warrenton Lab for a chicken necropsy. Full circle. I know he is missed by his family and friends - Joe was a great guy and taken way too soon. Greg, Kay, Sean and Henry Robertson - Viewtown, VA.
I’m sorry that that is so late. I just found out recently. I was a classmate of Joe’s. I also lived with him and Rodney Cole for a year. It goes further than that. I lived with him and his family for several weeks when I was doing a rotation at the EMC in Leesburg. Joe was a gentle person. He introduced me to bluegrass. We went to see Tony Rice in Blacksburg, and to several events in Lucketts, VA. He had a sweet voice and was an exceptional guitar player. He also had a great interest in birds, especially raptors. I’m sad that we couldn’t keep in touch. I’m sad that we lose touch with so many people. I’m sad that he’s gone. My deepest condolences to all of his family.
Condolences to Sue and all of Joe’s family and friends. A kind soul. God bless.
I only met Joe a couple of times thru his wife Sue. He was very kind and curious to learn about our research activities at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute. I am so sorry for your loss Sue. This is devastating. May the powers above give you and your family the strength to handle this. May his soul rest in peace.

Joe was a delight to have as a classmate (CVM-1987); always a smile, a kind word, a gregarious nature, and lovely sense of humor! He was a well liked and integral part of the class of '87 and made the arduous journey thru Veterinary school just that much more enjoyable. So saddened by his passing, and I would bet all of his classmates would wan to send kind thoughts and prayers to his family and loved ones-- Eric Swinebroad,

I always loved visiting Joe at his lab back when my boys were in 4H. He was a soft spoken-great story teller who loved to teach others. He and Sue recently this year spent time with our school age students at CCLC. We will cherish all the moments we had with Mr. Joe. Our condolences to Sue our Children-in-Nature Coordinator, Ben and Ryan their sons and the rest of the family. Our hearts break for you all.
George and I send our condolences and sympathy to Sue, Ryan and Ben and to his parents, Paul and JoAnn Garvin and his siblings and extended family. We didn't see Joe much but when we did he was always smiling and a happy person. I remember when he was at home (Garvins are our neighbors) Joe cooked sometime and it seemed he really enjoyed it. Our hearts, love and blessings go out to the family. George and Velma Sturgill
