Joseph O'Dell Chapman's Obituary
Whereas, it has pleased Almighty God to call home our beloved Joseph O’Dell Chapman from labor to reward on Thursday, March 6, 2025.
Joseph O'Dell Chapman, 72 of Culpeper, was born to the late James Irving Chapman, Jr. and Gladys Moore Hearns on April 16, 1952.
He received Christ at an early age under the leadership of Rev. J.A. Holmes and was ordained as a deacon in 1976 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Culpeper, VA. For the last twenty-eight years, Joe was a devoted member of Divine Life Full Gospel Baptist Church, serving faithfully as Deacon, Choir Member, and Sunday School Teacher, and living a life that exemplified love, kindness, and service.
Joe received his elementary and secondary education from A.G. Richardson Elementary School and Ann Wingfield Elementary School and graduated from Culpeper County High School (CCHS) in 1972. While attending CCHS, he met the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Lucy Glascoe. He loved sports and was a lineman for the CCHS football team.
At the age of 33, he took over the family construction business, Chapman Construction, which specialized in concrete, stucco, and plaster. He worked at Merillat for 24 years in maintenance. He owned a ‘55 Chevy named “Sweet Lucy”, after the love of his life.
Joe’s hobbies were mowing the yard and washing cars. His close friends called him “Hollywood” and “Broadway” because he always had nice cars, big pockets, and a great personality. He was a devoted husband, an amazing father, an incredible grandfather, and the best brother. Joe was also known for wearing bright colors, never brown or gray, and even painting his dress shoes to match his suits for church.
Joe was preceded in death by his brothers, John Lewis Chapman, Sr. and William "Pee Wee" Edward Chapman; brothers-in-law, Henry (June) Lewis Glascoe, Jr. and John David Glascoe.
