Joseph Blackhawk Milton Breeden
Joseph Blackhawk Milton Breeden, 92, of Culpeper died Sunday, December 29, 2013 at Culpeper Regional Hospital. He was born October 23, 1921 in Elkton, VA to the late Elmer and Helen Breeden.
Mr. Breeden was a devoted family man, survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Ruth Vashti Redmon Breeden. “Blackhawk” Breeden had a large family including 13 children and was known as “Pop Pop” to over 75+ grandbabies. He was baptized at Boulevard Baptist in Falls Church.
He was a lifetime member of the Steamfitters Local Union 602 and was a welder for over 60 years during which he worked in the Baltimore Shipyards during WW II and at the White House during the Kennedy-Era.
He was also very active as a lifetime member of the Masons, where he held positions of: Grandmaster, Worshipful Master and Worthy Patron. He was active as a member in Eastern Star and the Shriners, where he liked to “cut a rug” at Shriner dances and was first in line at all you can eat buffets.
Blackhawk retired living on his own small farm where he continued to pursue his lifetime love of camping (member of Virginia Arva Bird Dog Camping Club), fishing, boating and backyard barbeques. He loved his critters including horses, mules, cats and dogs. A local “Animal Whisperer”, he talked to animals and they talked to him. He was a modern day cowboy who drove mule drawn wagons in parades. He was an avid storyteller and was known to shake his cane at you if you didn’t believe his tall tales.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ruth Vashti Redmon; ten children, Mary Catherine Allen, Steven Frazier, Welbie L. “Willy” Frazier, Patricia Barnette, Barbara Jean Reese, Linda Barton, Margaret Irle, Irene Prewitt, Joanna Breeden and John Frazier; six siblings, Margaret Caperton Miller, Ora Nicholson, George Rife, Jr., Hazel Williams, Helen Smith and Hilda Jean Christ; thirty three grandchildren; thirty eight great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three children, Gloria Jean Breeden, Millard Breeden and Vicky Breeden Armistead.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 3, 2014 from 7 to 9 pm at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, VA. A Masonic Funeral Service will be held at 8 pm.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 2 pm at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel with Rev. Bart Purdy officiating.
Interment will follow in Culpeper Masonic Cemetery.
