Jonas Alther,Jr.'s Obituary
Jonas Alther, Jr., 78, of Washington died Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at his residence. He was born August 8, 1933 in Sperryville to the late Jonas Alther, Sr. and Louise Jenkins Alther.
Mr. Alther served his country in the US Army and was a 50 year veteran of the Carpenters Union Local 2033. He was a lifetime member of the Washington Volunteer Fire Department where he was past president. He was a dedicated father, husband and grandfather. Mr. Alther was always known to put other’s need before his own.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Hawkins Alther, his children, Jonas Wayne Alther of Washington, Judy Kay Deal of Amissville, Janet Leigh Payne of Washington, and Julie Ann Payne and her fiancé, Luke Zindell, IV of Amissville.
Additional survivors include two sisters, Marie Brown of West Virginia, Rebecca Menefee of Texas, one brother, Bill Alther of Madison, two grandchildren, Jamie Deal and Jonathan Deal, and two great grandchildren, Jordan Welch of Sperryville and Louis Zindel, V.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Annebella Jefferson.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 19, 2011 at 1 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper VA with Rev. Phil Bailey officiating.
Interment will follow in Washington Masonic Cemetery.
Pallbearers named are Charles Ray Crawford, Opie Crawford, Luke Zindel, IV, Bobby Smoot, David Smoot and Bryant Lee. Honorary Pallbearers are Jerry Payne, Ennis Jenkins and Richard Compton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Washington Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 238, Washington, VA 22747.
