Johnny Brown Tweddell's Obituary
Johnny Brown (JB) Tweddell, 90, of Culpeper, VA, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 20, 2025.
Johnny was born in Huntington, WV, on December 4, 1934, to James Herbert and Sally Eldora Tweddell. During his junior year of high school, he met his sweetheart and future bride, Carolyn Russell at Ashland High School in Ashland, KY.
Johnny had a lifelong love of music, especially the trumpet. He gave trumpet lessons and led a dance band to help support himself and Carolyn while they attended Eastern Kentucky University (EKU), where he earned a B.A. in Music. Throughout his life, Johnny continued to share his musical gifts, singing and playing the trumpet in the churches that he and Carolyn called home.
A member of ROTC at EKU, JB received a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps upon graduation. He attended flight school and went on to fly both rotary and fixed-wing aircraft. During his eight years of service, he was stationed at Fort Monmouth, NJ; Fort Huachuca, AZ; and Stuttgart, Germany, during the Cold War. After his military service, Johnny joined United Airlines, where he enjoyed a distinguished 30-year career as a pilot, retiring as Captain.
Johnny and Carolyn raised their two daughters, Jan and Carol, in Fairfax, VA, before retiring to Eufaula, AL. They returned 4 years ago to Virginia to be closer to family.
A musician and pilot with a creative streak, JB often expressed his artistry through home improvement and decorating projects. He loved to travel and explore new places. A devoted son and brother, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, loyal friend, and steadfast dog lover, Johnny was an all-around exemplary role model who will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Johnny is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Carolyn; daughters: Jan Dunn (Dale) and Carol Coil (Bob); seven grandchildren: Ben Coil, Ian Coil (Erika), Nat Coil (Joann), Rachel Harmon (Bryan), Caela Rios (Adalid), Jason Dunn (Jessica), and Tyler Dunn (Catherine); and fifteen great-grandchildren: Kimber, Sawyer, Everett, Cruz, Cadence, Maddox, Sydney, Walker, Callie, Leo, Cannon, Kieran, Maya, Luke, and Ronan. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Lena Fern; and brother-in-law, Russell Barber.
