John Leonard Whitmer's Obituary
John Leonard Whitmer, 77, of Bealton died Friday, April 8, 2011 at his residence, surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 31, 1933 to the late Henry L. Whitmer and Amy Leonard Whitmer.
Mr. Whitmer worked for over 20 years as a farmer on Timbuktu Farm for E. W. Messick, Jr., whom he loved dearly. He greatly enjoyed attending First Baptist Church in Brandy Station and loved his pastors, Charles Shifflett and Russell Jenkins.
An Army veteran, Mr. Whitmer served in the Korean Conflict.
He is survived by his wife, Constance Louise Whitmer, and five children, Brenda Travis and her husband, Jimmy, of Smithburg, Maryland, William Whitmer and his wife, Arlene, of Bealton, Steve Whitmer and his wife, Linda, of Remington, Tammy Baldwin and her husband, John, of Culpeper, and Penny Whitmer of Luray.
Additional survivors include five brothers, Taylor, Edward, Charlie, Albert and Buck Whitmer, and five sisters, Dorothy Besley, Kitty Longhorn, Donna Longhorn, Jane Hinder and Florence Lindamood. He is also survived by twenty-one grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by three brothers, Harry Lee, Daniel and Dave Whitmer, four sisters, Joan Whitmer, Jean James, Clair O’Rourke and Peggy Wolfe, two grandchildren, Maggie and Anthony Gaver.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 from 7-9 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, VA.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Brandy Station with Rev. Russell Jenkins officiating.
Interment will follow at Culpeper National Cemetery.
