John Clapham Truesdell Jr.'s Obituary
John Clapham Truesdell, Jr., 55, a resident of Chancellorsville, Virginia, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2023. The Son of Colonel John & Diane Truesdell, Retired, John was born at Fort Bliss Army Hospital in El Paso, Texas on August 2, 1968. Fondly known as Johnny to his family, he enjoyed life to the fullest. Johnny grew up in a military family living in Germany, Oklahoma, Kansas, California, Hawaii, Pennsylvania and Virginia. By living in so many locations, Johnny became very social and made friends easily. Johnny graduated from Fairfax High School in Fairfax, Virginia and attended East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. Johnny settled permanently in Virginia after college, where he began a successful career in the insurance industry.
At school, Johnny became a top athlete and excelled in sports like baseball, wrestling, surfing, tennis and was a scratch golfer. Johnny loved music. He enjoyed playing the piano and guitar, and ended up playing lead guitar in several bands. Another of Johnny’s passions was fishing. He loved to fish with his father and uncle and every summer would fish in the Northern Rocky Mountains in the panhandle of Idaho on the Coeur d’Alene River and into Canada. Johnny had the opportunity to fly fish with his brother-in-law on trips to Bristol Bay Alaska as well as Lake of the Woods in Ontario, Canada. He loved to hike and was happiest in the outdoors. One of his most treasured accomplishments was attaining the highest rank of Eagle Scout and the Order of the Arrow honor society in the Boy Scouts of America.
A devoted father, son, and brother, he instilled his appreciation of nature and all of his interests in his child Addison. Johnny is remembered for his remarkable sense of humor, charisma and charm and was a natural leader. Johnny cared deeply for his family, friends and pets – all were extremely important to him.
Johnny is survived by his parents, Colonel John and Diane Truesdell, Ret., his two sisters and their families, Stephanie and husband Tim, niece and nephews Amanda, Matthew, Scott and Cameron; Laura and husband Mike, niece and nephew Cecilia and Colin; and his beloved Addison, 16. Addie was his greatest joy in life!
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at Saint Leo the Great Catholic Church, Fairfax, VA. A reception will follow.
