John R. Payne's Obituary
John R. Payne, 84, of Culpeper passed away on Sunday, November 17, 2013 at his residence. He was born July 17, 1929 in Orange, VA to the late Lloyd Ryvers Payne and Fannie Suder Payne.
John went to work at a very young age and served his country in the US Army as a Sergeant. He and his family operated the Welcome Travelers Truck Stop in Opal before closing in the early 70’s. He then spent the next 29 years at Merchants Grocery Co. where he was known as “Pappy”.
John is survived by his son; John Richard Payne and his wife, Patricia of Culpeper; grandsons, Chris Payne and his wife, Becky and Richard Payne and his wife, Farrah; great grandchildren, Kyle, Marley, Ian and Carter; sister, Carrie Breeden and her husband, Jesse; and sister-in-law, Francis Payne.
Additional survivors include his special friends, Mike and Barbara Gantley and their daughter, Meghan; his wonderful caregivers, Patricia Miller, Sarah Taylor and Bertha Alexander; and his past and present Merchants Grocery family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife; Ruby Sisk Payne; his second wife, Virginia Kerns Payne; and three brothers, Charles “Buddy”, Donald and Robert Payne.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 from 6 to 8 pm at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at 11 am at Fairview Cemetery with Rev. Jeff Light officiating.
