John Russell Aylor's Obituary
John R. Aylor passed away on Friday, February 17, 2023 at Lake Manassas Health and Rehab. He was born on January 31, 1933 in Madison Co., VA to the late Russell Bryant and Ruth Aylor of Culpeper, VA.
John was a member of Culpeper United Methodist Church, the Fairfax Lodge A.F. & A.M., and the Jump Mtn. Hunt Club in Rock in Rockbridge, VA.
In loving memory of John R Aylor, an amazing husband, brother, father and grandfather. John gave everything to his family and friends. He touched this world with his kindness, Strength and compassion.
John was a story teller. Through these stories, we learned about his early days and life on the farm in rural Virginia. Drawing from priceless memories, the stories were full of color and humor and amazingly interesting. There was always a moral or lesson to be learned at the end of each and there was no doubt they were true. Now these stories took some time – so if he got started, you were going to be there for a while. It was obvious, those early days on the farm shaped his love and appreciation for people, animals, and the work ethic he adopted. We are grateful he passed these priceless memories onto anyone who would listen.
He loved the outdoors, he could fix anything and above all loved a good joke. He looked forward to spring turkey hunting, hunting morel mushrooms, shad fishing and spending time at the beloved Hunt Club near Lexington, VA. Later in his hunting career, John enjoyed seeing nature far more than bringing anything home. He admired the animals and understood them far more than any person I had ever known. Of all the languages one could speak, John learned how to communicate with animals – he was as close to a Doctor Doo Little as anyone we ever knew.
Many great memories were shared with extended family and a lifetime of friendships developed. There wasn’t anything John couldn’t do… He loved a project and helping others above all.
While John was raising his family, he enjoyed a rewarding career with Virginia Department of Transportation and T. Y. Lin International. He loved his work and John would say he never worked a day in the life.
We were all lucky and God blessed us with a grandchild Mason. Barbra became Grammy and John became Pa Pa – a title he wore with honor and pure joy. He taught Mason to whistle before he could talk. He spent priceless hours on the dock with bobbers in the water. I remember Pa Pa holding Mason with one hand and reeling in the fish with the other. Who had a bigger smile? Mason or Pa Pa? John could barely tell those stories without long bursts of laughter. Father’s Day weekends became a treasured tradition at Lake Anna with crabs and of course, some cold drinks
John kept busy and the outdoors was a way of life. He somehow found time for fly fishing trips to Montana, and floating trips down the James River. He loved to be outdoors spending time with his son Kevin, son-in law Ray, and grandson Mason at every opportunity. Those outings will be missed. We will recall his stories to the best of our ability and Mason will pass those along to his children. John lives on through our priceless times and memories and he will live in hearts forever.
We remember John, the Husband, father, grandfather and compassionate man we were all lucky to know.
You will be forever in our hearts as you have touched us with yours.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, R. Bruce Aylor, and Floyd Aylor.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Barbara Aylor; children, Kevin (Kathie) Aylor, Shelley (Raymond) Davenport; grandson, Mason Davenport; and sister, Mary Ann (Danny) Jenkins.
