Joanne Anita Singleton's Obituary
Joanne Anita Singleton (nee Cagle) passed away at her home of 48 years in Castleton, Virginia, on January 2, 2025. She was born to the late James Burton Cagle, Sr., and Nellie Virginia Pflager Cagle on August 23, 1941, in Maryland and grew up in Carmody Hills, Maryland.
Joanne and John (J.B.) met on a blind date and were married on December 6, 1958, in Washington, DC. After living in Arlington, they lived in Vienna, Virginia until they moved to their forever home in Rappahannock County in 1976. She was known to those who loved her as Mom, Mama, or Jo, but her favorite name to answer to was “Nana”. Joanne spent a lifetime sharing her love of family, and “family” was defined at times as anyone who showed up for a football game or a Sunday meal. You would find her in the kitchen where her “love language” consisted of the best fried chicken on the planet and lasagna that could feed an Army. She loved her Washington Commanders, crabbing on the eastern shore and could pick crabs for
hours. Her family always came first and she would go to the ends of the earth to make sure they always had what they needed or wanted.
Joanne is survived by her husband of 66 years, John Benjamin Singleton, Sr. of Castleton, VA; her children, Virginia Lee Settle and her husband, Steve of Rixeyville, VA, Daniel Charles Singleton and his wife, Patty, of Culpeper, VA, and Dawn Marie Halterman and her husband, John, of Maurertown, VA; her grandchildren, Steve Settle, Jr., Misty Johnson (Jason), Amanda Weigel (Jonathan), Kristina Bates (Treavor), John Singleton, III (Deanna), Alexis Halterman, and Jake Halterman; her great-grandchildren, Kady Pina, Camden Johnson, Abigail Weigel, Savannah Singleton, Liam Bates, and John Singleton, IV; her siblings, Ronald Cagle, Sr. of Delaware and Pat Skinner (Richard) of North Carolina.
In addition to her parents, Joanne is preceded in death by her eldest child, John Benjamin Singleton, Jr; her siblings, James “Jim” Burton Cagle, Jr. (Kathy), Richard “Dick” Raymond Cagle, Sr. (Sue), Beverly Cagle, Joan Cagle, Barbara Ellen England, Ruth Irene Newman (Walter) and Nancy Virginia Chesebro’ (Larry).
A celebration of life will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at Lenn Park, 19206 Edwin Way, Culpeper, VA 22701.
