Jerry Mason Stanley's Obituary
Jerry Mason Stanley, of Culpeper, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 28, 2025, surrounded by his wife and most of his children in his home. He was born June 1, 1936, in Botetourt, VA, to the late Vester and Lena Stanley.
Jerry was known for his genuine smile, quick wit, and that classic phrase, “Use that lump on your shoulders." He was the kind of man who could fix anything, tell a story better than any book, and outwork men half his age. He had sawdust in his veins, a Bible in his truck, and a joke ready to be said.
He loved his wife with unwavering devotion and served the Lord with a joyful purpose, always ready to lead someone to Jesus or to lend a helping hand. Watching bull riding brought him joy, but not nearly as much as a good laugh around the kitchen table or porch, reminiscing about old times, swapping funny stories, and making new memories with family and friends. He taught many how to live with grit, grace, and a giving spirit. A mentor to many, he’d often remind you to “Keep it on the hip” when it came to money, though he was the first to give his shirt off his back, and probably offer to build them a closet to put it in, too.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Wanda "Sue" Burdette Stanley, children, Debby Stanley Huffman and husband, Robert, Randy Stanley and wife, Drema, Jerry “Sonny” Stanley, II, and wife, Jamie, Laura Stanley Wells and husband, and Allen, Sissy Stanley Hoffman and husband, Donald; grandchildren, Mason Stanley and wife, Marla, Grace Stanley Groves and husband, Baden, Lydia Stanley, Rachel Clouser and husband, Addison Clouser, Brande Wells Roberts and husband, Josh, Samantha Wells, Aaron “A.J” Barlow, Gehrig Barlow, Joseph Barlow, Kendal Barlow Richey and husband, Evan, and Jeremy Stanley, Candice Stanley-Wolfe and husband, Shawn, and Melinda Huffman; great grandchildren, Bryce Wolfe, Eli Wolfe, Maddie Stanley, Morgan Stanley, and Max Stanley; siblings, Junior Stanley and wife, Gaby, Bobbie Montgomery and husband, Jettie; brother in law, Elwood Switzer; and a host of extended family and friends.
In addition to his parents, Jerry is preceded in death by his grandson, Jesse Wells; sisters, Louise Vest, Diane Switzer, Joy McComb, Hazel Stanley, and Phyllis Stanley; and his brother-in-law, Bill Vest.
