Janice Bell Godfrey's Obituary
Janice Bell Godfrey of Culpeper, VA passed away peacefully on Friday, May 27, 2022 at The Culpeper Retirement Community at the age of 96.
Janice was born in Exeter, New Hampshire on July 15, 1925 where she spent her childhood. She attended high school at the Robinson Female Seminary and graduated in 1943. After graduation she worked at MIT as a technician in their Radiation Laboratory until the end of WWII. She went on to attend the University of New Hampshire where she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. While at UNH she met her husband, Edward F. Godfrey and they were married at the Congregational Church in Exeter in 1948. After moves to Knoxville, TN, Williamstown, MA, and Brookfield, MA, they settled in Burtonsville, MD where Janice spent many years working as an elementary school librarian for the Montgomery County school system.
Janice will be lovingly remembered for her generosity and her sense of adventure. She loved to take long walks, go for ocean swims no matter how cold the water was, read historical novels, and visit her grandkids. She loved dogs, music and dancing, and she finished every craft project she ever started. Her grandkids called her “Blue Grandma” because her favorite color was blue.
She was predeceased by her parents, George and Lillian Kershaw; and brother, Glen Kershaw.
She is survived by her son, Peter Godfrey (Kathy) of Culpeper, VA; four grandchildren, Kelly Cappio (Matt) of Charlotte, NC, Christina Baviskar (Nikhil) of Philadelphia, PA, Matthew Godfrey (Molly) of Richmond, VA, and Jenna Fairlo (Myles) of Fredericksburg, VA; six great-grandchildren, Peter, Georgia, and Hayes Cappio, Maya Baviskar, Anna Godfrey, and Max Fairlo; sister-in-law, Beverly Kershaw; two nieces and two nephews.
