Janet Rose Pennington's Obituary
Janet Rose Pennington, 81, of Culpeper, died Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at Novant Health Systems UVA Culpeper Hospital. She was born January 17, 1942 in Beckley, WV to the late James and Bessie Lilly.
Janet was the most incredibly loving mother to her children. She even became "mom" to all of her children's friends and many others. Janet was a true angel. Janet graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School with the class of 1960. Shortly after, she met the love of her life, Lee Pennington, and they were married on November 17, 1962. Janet was an active member of Open Door Baptist Church for many years. She and Lee were saved together and baptized on the same day. Janet also volunteered with Samaritan’s Purse’s Operation Christmas Child and the Tim Tebow Foundation’s Night to Shine programs.
She loved her house plants, and buying plants that were doing poorly, so that she could revive them to their former beauty. She enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, and staying up late to talk on the phone with friends. Janet dreamed of going to Hawaii and Ireland. She enjoyed baking cookies with her grandchildren. She loved her mother, Bessie. Janet was the best at shopping and finding the deals, and she loved her “scratchies.”
Janet is survived by her husband, Lee; four children, Pamela Calaway (Agee), Patricia Uchil (Atul), Paula Mitchler (Tom), and Lee Pennington (Kim); elven grandchildren, Gerald Calaway (Michelle), Joel Calaway, Joshua Calaway, Katie Payne, Lindsey Palmberg, Cory Noonan, Sammy Cherbornier (Ryan), Danielle Owens, Tommy Mitchler, Liv Pennington, and Cade Pennington; four great-grandchildren, Kassidy, Kaleb, Levi, and Casey; and one brother, Jimmy Lilly (Donna).
In addition to her parents, Janet is preceded in death by her sisters, Donna Jensen and Patty Lilly.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 8, 2024 at Open Door Baptist Church, 754 Germanna Hwy, Culpeper, VA 22701 with Pastor Bernie Jernigan officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service.
Interment will follow at Culpeper National Cemetery, 501 E. Chandler Street, Culpeper. Pallbearers serving the family will be Lee Pennington, Jeremy Warden, Tommy Mitchler, Gerald Calaway, Cade Pennington, Joel Calaway, and Cory Noonan.
