James Shipley, Jr.'s Obituary
James L. Shipley, Jr., age 75 of Kent, PA., died Sunday, May 06, 2007, at Scenery Hill Manor.
He was born July 13, 1931 in Abingdon, Washington Co., VA to James L. and Martha (Grant) Shipley, Sr.
Mr. Shipley was a longtime resident of Fredericksburg, VA until he moved to Kent, Indiana Co., PA in November of 2006. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and he became a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam War before he retired as a Technical Sergeant in 1971. He then served as a Lieutenant with the Federal Civil Service, District of Columbia, Department of Corrections as a correctional officer supervisor for 20 years and from 1994 until his retirement in 2002 he worked as a correctional officer for the Virginia Department of Corrections. He was a charter member of the Spotsylvania Presbyterian Church of Spotsylvania County. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #320 of Spotsylvania, VA and the Fraternal Order of Police Blue Ridge Lodge #45. He enjoyed watching his favorite baseball team the Baltimore Orioles.
He is survived by his mother of Memphis, TN; one daughter, Sarah Bryant Rogers with whom he makes his home of Kent, PA; one granddaughter, Julia Ann Rogers at home; one brother, Marcus Shipley of Palo Alto, CA and one sister, Martha S. Fath and her husband Richard of Memphis, TN.
He was preceded in death by his father and his wife, Suzanne B. (Bryant) Shipley whom he married on October 6, 1973 and who died April 22, 2001.
There will be no visitation for Mr. Shipley. There will be a memorial service in Fredericksburg, VA at 1:00 PM on Friday, May 11, 2007 at the Found and Sons Funeral Chapels, on the corner of Courthouse Road and Southpoint Parkway.
Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania Co., VA.
