I would like to have said some words about Jim at the memorial service….and if I had known of the invitation to speak I would have been prepared. Here are the words I should have said:
Jim, Jimmy, Mac McEvoy is an integral part of the Class of 1957, Laurel High School. We had 57 graduates in 1957. Our class is a family. Jimmy shared the unique dedication and love we have for each other which has lasted from first grade through the 53 years since graduation. Jim joined our class family when he moved to Laurel. My recollections of Jim are personal; they are unexplained and ‘time cannot change’ feelings shared during our school years. Decades passed without seeing or knowing what was happening in our lives…but when the opportunity came for us to be together…it was as if it were yesterday. Jim was special in that way. Because he was liked by all and open in his associations, it was easy to renew our friendship which we did at reunions, class picnics and the everyday life of e-mail.
To me, Jim was the John Travolta character, Danny, in the classic movie Grease. He had the hair, carefully groomed by his hairdresser mother. Dark, full and bouffant. It was the envy of many and admired by all. He had the cars. As soon as he came of age - a flawless, spotless, fast beauty was parked on the circular drive of the school waiting….waiting for Jim after school or maybe for the inspiration to skip a class and cruise a bit. Jim was one of the smartest in our class but did not have much time for assignments…and for that reason, I was very important to him. I was helping him up to the night before graduation -- but that is another story. I hope he remembers! Jim was gentle in his speech and actions…with a funny sarcastic tinge.
I recall the night we got in Jim’s car to go to see Elvis in his one and only appearance in Washington DC - March 21, 1956. It was to be a cruise on the Wilson Line. However, so many teenagers came to see the new idol (who copied Jim’s hair) that the boat could not leave the dock. We sat mesmerized while Elvis sang over the screams of the girls, probably me too. After the show, we were marched single file through the kitchen serving area to meet Elvis, who was standing behind the counter. I have his autograph to prove that. Whenever, I saw Jim in the years hence, that night always drifted into the conversation. Jim McEvoy was LHS the idol of the 50’s!
The passing of Jimmy McEvoy has cheated us and reminded us how precious time is. We are delighted to know Trish and the blessings that came into his life with her. Jim cannot be replaced in our class, and when the Class of 1957 gathers, and we do it regularly, he will always be remembered. We will tell his stories over and over…..and Trish will gather with us to hear them….over and over again.

Jim was a good friend on ours over the years when he lived in Amissville, even though we lost contact over the last few years, he was a great guy and will surely be missed. Our deepest sympathy goes out to his wife and Mother. May God give you strength at this sad time.
