James A. Hopkins' Obituary
James A. Hopkins , 79, died peacefully at UVA Hospital surrounded by his family on Wednesday, April 18. He was the husband of Shirley Edgecomb Hopkins. Born and raised in Cobleskill, NY, educated in Washington, D.C., Mr. Hopkins served in the Army during the Korean war. He later lived in Silver Spring and Darnestown, MD and worked as a technical writer. In 1977 he moved to Unionville, VA and became a farmer. He was a longtime member of the Orange Presbyterian Church, previously a Deacon in the Sixth Presbyterian Church of Washington D.C., and also a member of Darnestown Presbyterian. In his free time he enjoyed visiting his children, grandchildren, woodworking, fishing, and his horse.
Mr. Hopkins is survived by his wife, Shirley, children, Denise Hopkins of Lincoln City, Oregon, George McArthur and his wife Rosie of Harrisonburg, VA, and Stuart McArthur and his wife Reyna of Richmond, VA. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren: George McArthur IV and his wife Christina, Shirlina McArthur, Stephanie McArthur, Katherine McArthur, Cindy McArthur, Nathan Kuhlman, Alison Kuhlman, Mollie Kuhlman, Benjamin Kuhlman, and Jessie Kuhlman. He is also survived by his brother Robert Hopkins and his wife Juanita Hopkins of Texas, and his sister Eileen Pendergrass of New York.
Preceded in death by his father, Arden George Hopkins, and his mother, Margaret Sylvia Draper.
A burial service with family and close friends will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 26, 2012, at the Culpeper National Cemetery, 305 U.S. Avenue, Culpeper, VA 22701.
A memorial celebration of Jim's life will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, April 26, 2012, at Orange Presbyterian Church, 162 W. Main Street, Orange, Virginia 22960. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Orange Presbyterian Church and/or the rescue squad would be appreciated. He was a beautiful soul who will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
