The Judge was a great storyteller and always a larger-than-life character. It was a pleasure knowing him and having the opportunity to spend time with him.He was always amused and entertained by my lawyer wife JB as they shared experiences.
Through my family ties in King George County, I was privileged to have met and casually be in the presence of Judge Haley. He was man of dignity, humor, respect, and a scholar of the law.
My sincerest condolences are extended to his family and to all those who also had the privilege of knowing him.

Jim was not only a good neighbor but a good friend and I'll miss him greatly. So many happy memories of him discussing books and history and everything else under the sun, punctuating his thoughts every few minutes by darting into his library and returning with the relevant book (and a fresh cigarette). I learned a lot from Jim, not just from his excellent library but from his deep and practical knowledge of human nature.
I'm very glad that I had time to tell how much I liked his novel, it was a fine piece of writing by a man who'd read just about everything and knew a thing or two about American literature.
Sending all the Haleys my condolences, hope to see you this summer.

Our deepest sympathies to his family and friends. Judge Haley and Robert Ackerman conducted the closing on my first house in Fredericksburg in 1973. I always appreciated his insights and enjoyed his sense of humor. Rest in Peace.
