Jack and Phyllis were our backyard neighbors when we resided in Fox Point, Fredericksburg, Va, from 1992 to 2004. Jack and I shared a Texas heritage and I admired Jack for his courageous military service and devotion to country. Since relocating to California, my wife and I maintained contact with Jack over the years and have felt a kindred relationship with him. He gave us a copy of his book, "Never Say Die," which was a fascinating account of his POW experience in the Philippines. We grieve his loss and wish his family God's grace and comfort in this time. We will miss him greatly. He represented the best this country has to offer.

My deepest sympathy at this tough time. I only knew Jack briefly because I read "Escape From Davao" and discovered in the back of the book that he lived in Fredericksburg, VA---- just 3 miles from my house!!! I called Jack and we had two sessions where he related some of his experiences--AND he presented me with an autographed copy of his book, "Never Say Die". I'd like to offer my sympathies, condolences and prayers to the family of Col. Hawkins, an officer, gentleman, patriot and hero. I got to know Col. Hawkins ten years ago, when I first began researching my book, "Escape From Davao." It's no exaggeration to say that without Hawkins and his help, my book would not have been possible. I feel extremely fortunate to have known him and called him a friend. Rest in peace, Col. Hawkins, S/F and thanks for everything!
