J. Ray Shade's Obituary
J. Ray Shade, 88, of Culpeper died Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at Autumn Care in Madison, Virginia. He was born in Oakland, West Virginia on August 26, 1927. He was the son of the late Ernest Shade and Lula Bohrer Shade.
Ray served in the Merchant Marines from 1945 to 1947. He married Rebecca Dwyer on March 12, 1949 in Hagerstown, Maryland. He was in the Life Insurance business for 37 years; in Winchester, Fredericksburg, Charlottesville, and for the last 21 years was General Manager of the Arlington, Virginia District until his retirement in 1986.
After his retirement Ray was a volunteer at the Culpeper Regional Hospital Auxiliary for the past 25 years. He was a member of the Culpeper United Methodist Church and a member of the local chapter of the AARP for the past 25 years. Ray was also a life member of the VFW Post 2524.
Ray was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Rebecca Dwyer Shade; he is survived by one son, Kenneth Ray Shade and his spouse, Rosemary Evans of Charlottesville, Virginia; one daughter, Susan Barentine and her husband, Robert of Conway, South Carolina; one sister, Anna McIntire and her husband, Victor, of Winchester, Virginia. He was predeceased by one brother, Virgil Shade and four sisters, Melvie Youngblood, Lola DeHaven, Esther Kirby and Eva McIntire, all of Winchester, Virginia.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at 2 pm at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, VA with Pastor Randy Orndorff officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Interment will follow in Washington Masonic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the UVA Culpeper Hospital Auxiliary, 501 Sunset Lane, Culpeper, VA 22701 &/or Culpeper United Methodist Church, 1233 Oaklawn Drive, Culpeper, VA 22701.
