Howard Lee Sheldon
Howard Lee Sheldon, 81, of Spotsylvania County, passed away Friday, November 21, 2008 at Mary Washington Hospital’s in Fredericksburg, after a lengthy illness.
Howard was born in Clearwater, Minnesota May 13, 1927 to Levi and Ebba Sheldon. He was married to his wife Beverly Moe Sheldon for 56 years.
A 1945 graduate of Annandale High School in Minnesota, Howard went on to what was then St. Cloud State Teachers’ College where he received his bachelors of science degree. He also served in the Navy from August 1951 to August 1955. After his discharge from the Navy, he then completed his masters program in Wildlife Management at Penn State University. Howard then went on to work for the Commonwealth of Virginia in Culpepper, Virginia, and also the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service in Park Falls, Wisconsin on the Chequamegon National Forest until his retirement in 1987. When the Sheldon’s moved to Fredericksburg, Howard worked for Roxbury Garden and Farm for several years
Howard enjoyed traveling, gardening, especially roses, woodworking and chair-caning, music including his singing in the Christ Luthern Church choir and in the Fredericksburg Historyland Barbershop chorus, and fishing. Always involved in church, Howard served as Luther League leader and was on the congregation council at Peace Lutheran Church, Park Falls. Additionally, he and his wife were among the founders of Christ The Servant Lutheran Church, Park Falls. Howard enjoyed the fellowship and Bible studies at Christ Lutheran Church, Fredericksburg.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his sons and daughters-in-law, Craig and Nancy Sheldon of Spotsylvania; Colonel Curtis and Cathy Sheldon of Fairfax Station, Virginia; a daughter and son-in-law, Lexi and David Schafer of Westminster, Maryland, and grandchildren, Jacob, Zachary and Kimberly Sheldon and Creason and Chamberlyn Schafer. In addition, Howard is survived by nieces, Nancy Moll of Clearwater, Minnesota, and Sue Lynn Doering of Clear Lake, Minnesota, and a nephew Brad Tesmer of Clear Lake, Minnesota, as well as other relatives.
Howard was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Carl Tesmer.
The family will receive friends Monday, November 24, 2008 from 2:00-4:00 pm and 7:00-9:00 pm at Found and Sons Funeral Chapels-Cremation Service, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at 1:00 pm at Christ Lutheran Church, 1300 Augustine Avenue, Fredericksburg, with the Rev. Richard Carbaugh and Pastor Laura Vittucci officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fredericksburg, Virginia.
