Henry Frank Sulima's Obituary
Henry “Hank” Sulima passed away on May 4, 2023 at the age of 102.
Hank was born on June 8, 1920 in Chicago, IL. He enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938 and served for 18 months at Camp Tomahawk, Wisconsin working as a draftsman and surveyor’s assistant. During WWII, he was deployed for more than two years with the Army Air Corps in the South Pacific where he established weather stations on Pacific islands as U.S. and Allied troops conquered them, one by one, en route to Japan. After the war, he married Irene, his wife of 67 years and his son Jack was born in 1945. He was a corporate auditor and accountant and worked for stewardess services at United Airlines from 1947-1980.
In his retirement, Hank and Irene moved to Vero Beach, Florida and enjoyed an active social life with their friends in the community. They enjoyed traveling around the world and going on cruises with their friends. Early in his retirement, Hank and Jack backpacked in the Rocky Mountains. And in 2015, they traveled together to his ancestral town in Poland. Hank served as the National Treasurer and Regional Director of the National Association of Civilian Conservation Corps Alumni (NACCCA) and was a board member of its successor, Civilian Conservation Corps Legacy (CCCL).
A funeral Mass will be held for Hank and Jack on Thursday, June 1 at 10:00am at St. Helen Catholic Church in Vero Beach, FL. The following link can be used to view the service: https://vimeo.com/event/3412267
