Henry Harrison Horton's Obituary
Henry Harrison Horton, 86, of Farnham, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 20, 2012, with his loved ones at his side. He ascended to his reward after a brave battle with Leukemia.
He was a man of incredible faith and strength and leaves behind a lasting legacy of love and kindness for all that he touched.
Henry served with the Fourth Marine Division throughout World War II, with twenty-three months of that service spent in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations. After his military service he began his career with the United States Postal Service starting as a substitute letter carrier and later retiring as Deputy Regional Director of the Washington U.S. Post Office Department in 1971. Henry then spent several years as a consultant on postal affairs. One of his most significant achievements was his participation in the development of an emergency (Gasoline Rationing Contingency Plan) for the Federal Government during the 1974 energy crisis. He later worked for Sears Roebuck and Co, where he served as Credit Authorization Manager for the greater Washington, D. C. area.
Henry and his family resided for many years in Alexandria where he was a Deacon at Woodlawn Baptist Church near Ft. Belvoir. After moving to Colonial Beach he served as a Deacon at Colonial Beach Baptist Church and as a member of the Colonial Beach Planning Commission. Henry was currently a member of Popes Creek Baptist Church, the American Legion, Fourth Marine Division Association, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, American Association for Postal Supervisors and the National Association of Letter Carriers.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 65 years, Betty J. Horton of Farnham, his daughter, Donna J. Barden and husband Marshall of Montross; two sons, Ronald W. Horton and fiance Coral Wheeler of Culpeper, Darrell B. Horton and his wife Betty of Montross; daughter-in-law, Joan Horton of Stafford; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter Nancy A. Sjogren of White Plains, Md. Henry was also (Grandpa) to a huge extended family who loved him dearly.
A memorial celebration will be held on Friday April 27 at 11:00 am at Popes Creek Baptist Church, Montross, Va., with the Reverend Richard Headley officiating. Fellowship will follow.
Interment will be at a later date at Quantico National Cemetery in a private family service.
