Harris H. Burke 's Obituary
Harris H. Burke, 83 passed peacefully July 1, 2018 at his residence in Culpeper surrounded by his wife and children. He was born January 2, 1935 in Rappahannock County to the late Gladys Mary and Charles J. Burke.
Harris was a dedicated family man and community volunteer. Harris served in the United States Army as a Military Policeman and served 6 years in the US Army Reserves. He retired from Omni Services, formerly Rental Uniform Services, after 38 years. Harris began his career as a route sales man and progressed upwards to Corporate Safety Director before his retirement. After retiring, Harris worked at Found and Son Funeral Home as he loved interacting with people and serving his community. Harris loved sports so much that he began officiating football and baseball for the Virginia High School League for 16 years and then worked part-time for Culpeper County Parks and Recreation after retirement.
Harris had passion and heart for serving others. He spent most of his life as a dedicated Lion. Harris was a member of multiple Lion clubs where he held various leadership roles including President, District Governor for Division 24-A and served as a board member and President of the Old Dominion Eye Bank Foundation. Lions Club International bestowed their highest accolade, the Melvin Jones Fellow award, upon Harris for his distinguished and dedicated humanitarian service.
Harris is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Ruth Burke; children, Patricia L. Pickett of Amissville, Melinda B. Irwin and husband, Donnie of Culpeper, Leitha B. Atkins and husband, Briant of Rhoadesville, and Michael J. Burke and wife, Kimberly of Culpeper; grandchildren, Jason R. Pickett of Culpeper, Tabitha J. Moore of Culpeper, Hillary R. Mastin of Tennessee, Edward Harris Brown of Tennessee, Michael M. Brown of Alabama, Phillip W. Burke, Jr. of Culpeper, Alex H. Burke of Culpeper, Johnathan W. Bobbitt of Massachusetts, Jacqueline B. Ryder of Gordonsville, Eliza K. Richards of Rhoadesville, Madelyn K. Atkins of Rhoadesville, Emmalee S. Burke of Culpeper, Blake A. Burke of Culpeper and Laynee S. Burke of Culpeper; and 15 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a son, Phillip W. Burke, Sr. and son-in-law, W. Roger Pickett.
A visitation will be held on Friday, July 6, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel of Culpeper, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, VA.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel with Rev. Ron Young officiating. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Jackie Smith, William Proctor and Jerry Haught. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Little Fork Volunteer Fire Department, 6011 Rixeyville Road, Rixeyville, VA 22737. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Heartland Hospice for their unconditional support and comfort.
Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
