Frederick Eugene "Fred" Saunders, Sr.'s Obituary
Frederick “Fred” Eugene Saunders, Sr., 89, of Roanoke passed away on January 10, 2017 at Lewis Gale Medical Center. Born in Elliston on January 5, 1928, he was the son of the late George D. and Mae Saunders.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother, George Saunders; and sisters, Dorothy Fetrow, Lorene Long, and Shelby Jean Short.
He proudly served our country in the Navy during two World Wars. He retired from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington DC and was an active member of the Gold Wing Rode Riders Association. Anyone who knew Fred knew that he always had a story to tell. He will be sadly missed by many family members, friends, and people who loved him dearly.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Bush Saunders; sons, Eugene Saunders Jr. (Millie), Allan Saunders, Gary Crawford (Katrina); daughter, Lisa Anderson (Clarke); brother, Jimmy Saunders (Lore) of Highpoint, NC; 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 13, 2017 at 1 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, VA with Pastor Sandy Martin officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Interment will follow in Culpeper National Cemetery with military honors provided by Culpeper VFW Post 2524.
