Fred DeMoers Moufang's Obituary
On Saturday, October 5, 2024, Fred D. Moufang passed away peacefully at the age of 104 in the company of dear friends and family at the home of his daughter in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He was a shining light to those that knew him. In his later years, he held the honor and distinction of being one of the oldest remaining World War II combat veterans still living in the area and greatly treasured the respect and love shown to him in his final days by the local veteran community.
Fred was born on May 4, 1920 in East Orange, New Jersey to Frank and Isadora Moufang. He had an older brother Harry and an older sister Evelyn with whom he shared a deep bond throughout their long lives. In 1943 Fred enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, and fought bravely in the battles of Saipan and Okinawa.
After the war, he returned to New Jersey and began a career in banking. He married Helen Johnson in 1948, and was father to Deborah Drolshagen and Fred Moufang, Jr. His family settled in Union, New Jersey where he would reside for over 50 years. Fred went on to become President and Chairman of the Board at the Mohawk Savings and Loan in Newark, NJ and was extremely active in the local business community and social milieu.
In 1993, Fred and Helen relocated to Fredericksburg, VA where they spent their later years as active and devoted grandparents and enjoyed a long and fulfilling retirement.
Fred was deeply admired by so many people. In his life he survived The Great Depression, World War II, and beat cancer. He was a man of inimitable enthusiasm and set an example for so many who loved him on how to live life to the fullest. He had many varied passions and interests including being an amateur artist and a die-hard golf enthusiast. He loved the Jersey shore, big band music and decorating his house for Christmas. He was disarmingly charming and charismatic. He was known to be a great dancer, gave the best toasts, told the funniest jokes and was the glue that held his family and friends together. He believed in a non-negotiable happy hour every day at 4:30, and never missed an opportunity to celebrate anything and everything with the many people he loved.
He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Drolshagen; his son-in-law, Herb Drolshagen; and daughter-in-law, Loraine Moufang. He is further survived by his grandchildren, Jonathan Drolshagen and his wife, Alissa Drolshagen, Stephen Drolshagen, Laura Garofolo, Kathy Jaremba; and six great-grandchildren. He was cared for in his later years by Samantha Smith, Esther Ackuayi and Heather Biller.
A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 22, 2024 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg. The family will receive friends one hour prior.
An inurnment for Fred and Helen will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 23, 2024 in Quantico National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Fred’s honor to Leashes of Valor to provide service dogs at no cost to wounded and disabled veterans, Leashes of Valor, 8407 Old Plank Rd, Fredericksburg, VA 22407 or online at leashesofvalor.org/donate/
