Florence M. Vernon's Obituary
Florence M. Vernon, 83, of Culpeper died Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at the University of Virginia Medical Center. She was born May 19, 1926 in Selma, NC to the late Percy and Hester Smith Underhill.
Mrs. Vernon was a member of the Culpeper Baptist Church for 29 years. In the various churches where she was a member during her lifetime, she taught Sunday school, served on various boards and committees and enjoyed singing in the church choir. She was also a member of Culpeper Christian Woman’s Group and the Culpeper Baptist Church Acts Class. In her earlier years, she worked for the FBI, was a bank teller, and worked for retail department stores. Mrs. Vernon was an avid gardener and a talented chef. Having grown up on a farm, she loved nature and animals. She will be remembered as a devoted and caring wife, mother, grandmother and sister.
She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Vernon Cunningham and her husband, David Cunningham of Avon, CT, her daughter-in-law, Victoria Vernon of Hagerstown, MD and two sisters, Ruby Briley of Tarboro, NC and Helen Peele of Danville, VA.
Additional survivors include four grandchildren, John Vernon of Nashville, TN, Margot Cunningham, Emily Cunningham and Brian Cunningham, all of Avon, CT.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gail Franklin Vernon, Sr., her son, Gail Franklin Vernon, Jr., and four siblings, William Underhill, Esther Rollins, Percy Underhill and Martha Kreem.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2010 at 12 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, VA with Dr. Ted Fuson and Rev. John Farrar officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
Interment will follow in Culpeper National Cemetery (New).
