Evelyn Elaine Story's Obituary
Evelyn Utterback Story of Spotsylvania, VA died on February 15, 2025 at home.
Evelyn was born to the late Harold B. and Mildred (Mouser) Utterback on August 27, 1940 in Atwood, Illinois. Evelyn lived most of her early life in nearby Tuscola, Illinois and after high school enrolled in the Decatur School of Beauty Culture. After graduation, she started her career as a cosmetologist.
Evelyn met the love of her life, Jesse, in 1958 in Tuscola while he was working a summer job. Evelyn and Jesse dated for two years and after many road trips from Rolla to Tuscola for weekends, they were married on her birthday in 1960. After a brief honeymoon they started their married life in Rolla, Missouri while Jesse completed his education. Evelyn and Jesse moved to West Frankfort, Illinois after graduation and they were blessed with three sons. During their time in West Frankfort, Evelyn continued to work as a beautician in addition to being a housewife and keeping up with three boys, all under the age of five. In 1966, Evelyn and her young family moved to Kentucky for Jesse’s first assignment with the Federal Highway Administration. Later they moved to Florida, and then to Northern Virginia. While in Northern Virginia, Evelyn started a new career as an office professional with a private company and later with the Unisys Corporation. Evelyn joked that they stayed so long in the Northern Virginia area that their three sons met three young ladies and the rest was history. Evelyn retired from Unisys in 1995. Not long after that, she and Jesse made another move, this time back to Kentucky. After a short stint in Kentucky, Jesse retired and they made a final move back to Virginia to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Evelyn is survived by her husband of 64 years and her sons, Bradley A. (Sharon) of Midlothian, Douglas H. (Sandra) of Bealton, and D. Eric (Frances) of Nokesville; a grandson, Carrington of Nokesville; two granddaughters, Jessica (Josh) Story-Johnson of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina and Maggie (William) Lake and son, Henry of King George, Virginia. Evelyn’s great grandson Henry was the light of her life and she always referred to him as her “doll baby.” She is also survived by a sister, Inez Martin of Kansas City Missouri; a brother, Robert “Bob” (Barbara) Utterback of Tuscola Illinois; sister-in-law, Dorothy Puckett of Cunningham Kentucky; and many nieces, nephews and cousins in addition to the friends she made through the years.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother; sister, Margaret Myers of Tuscola; and brothers, Dean Utterback of Pontiac Illinois and Wayne Utterback of Goldsboro, North Carolina
In accordance with Evelyn’s wishes, there will be no services or memorials. In lieu of flowers the family graciously requests contributions in her memory be made to the charity of your choice. Arrangements are being handled by Found and Sons Funeral Home of Fredericksburg, VA.
