I am sorry that I didn't know this sad news until today. Emory was a nice man, easy to talk to, and well-respected in Arlington County. Sympathy to his family and friends from a retired Arlington County dispatcher.
My name is Tom Addison. Emory was the 1st and has remained the 1st and best Building Official I have worked for. Matt Wilkins gave my name to Emory as a candidate for an inspector position in Arlington. I was so excited to become a Building Inspector! Through the training programs he started, I was able to become "Combination Building Inspector" in 2 years!!! During my entire career w/Arlington he made sure we ALL had every opportunity to learn our trades inspection processes and codes. He made sure we attended the VA. Building Code Acdemy the further our education in each of the different trades and their codes. Was part of an unbelievable time of Arlington County growth from its older residential areas to the bldg of reflective glasses towering above the streets. I
I am very proud to have worked for Emory and grateful he game me a shot at this great career that I'm still involved in.
Emory, you will surely and sorely be missed by all the thousands of professionals, inspectors and contractors that have had the opportunity and pleasure to have dealt with. I worked for Emory from July 1st of 1985 until end of January of 2001. Truly 15-1/2 years of inspections and education opportunities has helped me through out my career, even today when I posted his picture and obit in my cubicle in Coronado, CA. 33 yrs of service so far! Thanks Emory

Dear Cindy and family,
There are no words to pay tribute to the extraordinary man that was Emory. He was a mentor, champion and friend. It is difficult to wrap my mind around him not being here...not being able to email or pick up the phone for advice.
As a boss, he would challenge, sometimes demand and his expectations were high, but, he provided support for what others might think were crazy ideas or not possible, and always - he had your back.
As a code geek (technical term), he was an encyclopedia and icon. His life made a difference not just in Virginia, but across the nation. His legacy in the code profession will continue for generations.
He was an incredible strategist and visionary. His mind was light years ahead of where others were and he was mostly patient waiting for others to catch up. He would write down his predictions of something that would happen months later and he was always right! Of course, not everyone could read what he wrote.
And when it came to family, he was so proud...sharing stories or accomplishments of one or another of those he loved. I know you know, but he loved you all so very much!
He leaves a void that cannot be filled. If words of admiration for Emory alone could ease your pain, you all would be home free.
With deepest sympathy and all my love,
Cindy (2).

Cindy you and the family are in my thoughts and prayers. May God bless you with peace and comfort.
