Elmer "Matt" Mathews' Obituary
Elmer “Matt” Mathews of Culpeper, VA, devoted husband, father and grandfather, passed away on January 15, 2019 in Culpeper. He was born in 1937 to the late Elmer and Lillian Mathews of Wyandotte, Michigan.
Matt was married for 62 years to his beloved wife Ann and was the loving father of Richard and Scott Mathews.
Matt served in the United States Air Force for 20 years, with tours of duty in Vietnam, England and Germany. After retirement, his love of cars led him to work for Chrysler Military Sales before returning to Michigan where he established his own pallet and recycling business, “Once a Tree.” Upon moving to Culpeper in 2004, he became a member of the American Legion Post 330, where he served in many roles, including as a Vice-Commander.
In addition to his wife, sons and their wives, Matt is survived by his grandsons, Bradley and Ryan Mathews; granddaughters, Emma and Bethany Mathews; sister, Neda; and many cousins and beloved nieces and nephews in Michigan and England.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Mathews.
The family will receive friends on Monday, January 21, 2019 from 5 to 7 p.m. with Liturgy of Word being read at 5 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, VA.
A mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at 9:30 am at Precious Blood Catholic Church, 114 E. Edmondson St., Culpeper, VA with Father Kevin Walsh officiating.
Interment will be held on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at 10 a.m. at Culpeper National Cemetery with military honors provided by Culpeper VFW Post 2524.
