Elmer S. Atkins' Obituary
Elmer S. Atkins, 86, went to be with his Lord and Saviour on August 30, 2013 at his home in Sperryville, Virginia. He was born April 8, 1927 to the late Frank and Beulah Atkins.
He served in the U.S. Merchant Marines in 1945, and the U.S. Army in 1946 and 1947. He started in business by selling fruit and running a Phillip 66 gas station and an antique shop. Later he owned and operated a cold storage and a cider mill from which he sold cider to many people. Finally he was the owner of Elmer’s Antiques for many years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a friend to many and always had a smile with a handshake.
He is survived by his sister, Florine A.Estes, and his children, Beverly Conners and her husband, Larry, of Woodville, Judith Cress and her husband, Joel, of Amissville, and Roberta Kelly and Gary Gilkey of Sperryville. Additional survivors include ten grandchildren, Jennifer Conners Dawson, Bethany Conners Machazek, Abigail Cress, Timothy Gilkey, Margaret Gilkey, Mary Myers, Erin and Michael Gochenour, and Ronald and John Gilkey. Surviving great-grandchildren are Austin Williams, Cammi Belle Foster, Maximus Machazek, Molly and Jackson Gilkey, Jacob, Clara and Audrey Myers, and Sophia, Aallyah, Amry and Alexia Gilkey.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Martha J. Atkins, brothers Roxie, Robert and Jimmy, sister Geneva, sons Wade Douglas Gilkey, Kenneth Wayne Gochenour and Ronald G. Gilkey, and grandson Jonathan Edward Conners.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday , September 4, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel in Culpeper with Rev. Joel Cress officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Interment will follow at Washington Masonic Cemetery in Washington, VA.
Pallbearers will be James W. Keys, Austin Williams, Roger Atkins, George Weaver, Roy R. Atkins, Jr. and William Atkins, Jr.
