Ellen Lynn Maddox's Obituary
Ellen Lynn Maddox (Smith), 66, of Spotsylvania County, Virginia, passed away Monday, August 25, 2025, at her home, with her loving husband by her side. Her wish is to be interred with her husband in a National Military Cemetery. No memorial services are being held at this time.
She was born on May 24, 1959 in Lake Hurst, New Jersey to Ernest “Ed” Smith and Gaylinn Eshom Smith Frantz. Ellen’s father was in the Navy, so she grew up in many places, spending her formative years in San Diego, California.
Ellen moved to Virginia Beach and met Daryl Maddox who was serving in the Navy. Ellen and Daryl married on June 12, 1982 and raised their family in Virginia Beach, VA, Coronado, CA, and Spotsylvania, VA.
Ellen made a career of teaching almost exclusively at Chancellor High School teaching Special Education students in Spotsylvania County. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from the University of LaVern, LaVern California (Summa cum laude).
She pursued many interests and hobbies. She was a talented photographer, gardener, a certified Scuba Diver, an aerobics dance instructor, and qualified as an Expert Rifleman and Sharpshooter Pistol shot.
Ellen leaves behind a legacy of family members, including her husband, Daryl Maddox; stepmother, Patricia Smith; sisters Valerie Tiffany and Amy Hepner; brothers Steve Smith and Bruce Smith; daughters Kristi Zimmerman (Christopher), Kara Drewry, and Michelle Choi (Jacob); and grandchildren Caitlyn Major (Zimmerman), Ellenor Zimmerman, Annaleigh Zimmerman, Grayson Drewry, Kaylor Zimmerman, Evelyn Choi, Diana Choi, and Lael Choi.
Most importantly, Ellen is a child of God, selfless, a friend to many, and a wonderful person. She was loyal, loving, sweet, and a kind, gentle soul. Above all, Ellen was a firm believer in God; her savior is Jesus Christ and she spread the news about His saving power to all who listened. She truly encompassed the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Ellen was loved by all who knew her beautiful spirit and will be greatly missed.
