Elizabeth "Lizzie" Switzer's Obituary
Elizabeth C. “Lizzie” Hawkins Switzer, 91, of Castleton passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, May 15, 2012. She was born on March 16, 1921, in Rappahannock County to the late Clark and Betty Jane (Jenkins) Corbin. She married James T. Hawkins in 1936. He preceded her in death in 1982.
Elizabeth was a member of Hope Hill Baptist Church, in Castleton, VA, for many years where she shared her love for God and the Reverend Milton J. Switzer, whom she was married to from 1995 until his death in 2005. For the last few years of her life, she was a member of Gid Brown Bible Church.
She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Albert, Marshall, Willie, Raymond, Jack and Orie Corbin; sisters, Dora Carter, Mattie, Josie and Pearl Whorton; daughter, Josephine Pickett; sons, James T. Hawkins, Jr. and William “Billy” Russell Hawkins and grandsons, Charles Lee Hawkins, Jr. and Ronnie Pickett.
She is survived by one son, Charles Hawkins and his wife Betty, of Castleton, VA; five daughters, Pauline Grigsby of Culpeper, VA, Mary Knisley of Fredricksburg, VA, Shirley Hitt of Castleton, VA, Hazel Haines and her husband Richard of Brandy Station, VA, Lois Alther and her husband, William “Joe” of Rixeyville, VA, Stepsons Robert “Bobby” Switzer and his wife Dorothy of Culpeper, VA and Milton J. Switzer, Jr. and his wife Gloria, of Amissville, VA and stepdaughter Ruth Bower and her husband Norman, of Eastman, GA and one sister, Mary Lotis Weakley of Culpeper. Survivors also include 27 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and 25 great-great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at 12 pm at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel with Rev. John Burke and Pastor Carl Menefee officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service.
Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Ricky and Kenny Haines, Hugh Grigsby and great-grandsons Larry Brown “L.B.” Settle, Ricky Burke Jr. and James Riley.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Castleton or Amissville Volunteer Fire & Rescue Departments.
