Elijah James' Obituary
Elijah James was born on September 27, 1906 to the late Hossie Baker and Savannah Amos in Scotland Neck, North Carolina. Mr. Elijah James was called home to glory after a short illness on April 23, 2008 at McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond, Virginia.
Elijah was educated at Sams Head School in Scotland Neck.
Enlisting in the U.S. Army during WWII, Elijah served his country and was honorably discharged after four years of service.
After living in New York City for seventy years he returned to the south in June 2007 to live with his great nephew, Wilson “Wilbert” and Gladys Baker of Fredericksburg where he was greatly loved and respected by all who knew him. He lived a peaceful life in Virginia and became ill on April 19, 2008, when he was taken to the hospital. Elijah especially enjoyed his meals, watching westerns on the television, sitting on the porch on nice days and taking short trips to visit family.
He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Alvin Baker, Milton Baker, Dorothy Wilkins, Henrietta Hardisty, Joseph James and Emanuel James, Sr.
For his legacy, Elijah had no children. However, he leaves to cherish his memory, two nephews, Emanuel James, Jr. of Florida and Bill Baker, Sr. of Scotland Neck; one niece, Dora Clark of Scotland Neck; two special great nephews, Wilson “Wilbert” Baker and his wife, Gladys of Fredericksburg and Curtis Baker and his wife, Lois of New York and a host of great nieces; great nephews; other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends Saturday, April 26, 2008 from 1:00-2:00 pm at Found and Sons Funeral Chapels-Cremation Service, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm at the funeral chapel with the Rev. Ron Willis officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, NY at a later date.
